When fifth-grade student Lincoln Bakke sat down to write his Carson Scholars essay, he took the time to honor a teacher who made a huge impact on his life. He dedicated his essay to Ms. Eileen Friel, a beloved Havre de Grace Elementary School teacher who passed away earlier this year, reflecting on the lasting impact she had on his educational journey.

The tribute must have resonated with the scholarship selection committee, because Lincoln was named a 2026 Carson Scholar, earning national recognition for academic excellence and character.

During a school celebration recognizing Lincoln's accomplishment, Ms. Friel's daughter, Mrs. Madison Willis, joined students and staff for the occasion, making an already meaningful moment even more heartfelt.

Lincoln's story is a powerful reminder that the influence of a dedicated teacher can extend well beyond the classroom, and that the students they inspire carry that legacy forward in ways that are sometimes impossible to measure.
